Many people have been erroneously labeled as psychotic because of the significant amount of shared aspects between ASDs and PDs. It has also been shown that ASDs and PDs can co-exist. There are some common genetic and neuropathological factors between ASDs, while most neuropathological characteristics are quite distinct between the spectrums. Also, there is a considerable amount of heterogeneity in neuropathological profiles among both spectrums. Persons with ASDs have a higher risk of experiencing psychotic-like symptoms, although evidence on a heightened risk of experiencing of a psychotic disorder is sparse.
